Down In The Patch, The Cabbage Patch That Is

Some kids just keep landing on their feet. After 25 years in absentia, they’re coming back. I’m talking about the Cabbage Patch Kids™® After their heyday in the 80’s (if you don’t remember standing in line for them for hours on end, think playstation2 at Christmas) There were mom’s who actually fought each other to get just the right “kid” for their little darling.
These cuddly, wuddly loveable kids hit the skids after their fad ran its course. Coleco (the first mass producer) went out of business, then Hasbro and Mattel both took turns trying to mass market the dolls, but they never again captured the hearts of children or their early days “no two alike” feeling.
Until…now! Play Along® Toys,a division of JAKKS Pacific, Inc. are re-introducing the Cabbage Patch Kids™® for a new generation of children and also for their parents, who so fondly remember these dolls from their own childhood. Ultimately, its been speculated that the dolls are hitting the market, with the hopes that they are an antidote for those, ahem, “bratty” type dolls and will give kids a break (albeit somewhat suspicously (the kids have their own website) from the “plugged In” world.
This fall, Limited Edition 25th Anniversary Cabbage Patch Kids™® will be landing on store shelves for a limited time only. Unlike previous re-introductions of the kids, Play Along® has stayed true to the original look and themes of the dolls. In essence, these are the original “kids” and they are available in stores for the first time since their debut in the early 1980’s.
Each of these “kids” is an exact reproduction of an original- achieved through the use of the orignal molds, sulpts and exact materials used in the classics. They each come with25th Anniversary “birth” certificates with their original names, and adoption papers. Each Cabbage Patch Kid also has a special 25th Anniversary Xavier Roberts signature, and a “silver anniversary” baby spoon. The “kids” will retail at $29.99. Not too high a price for all those great memories! You can even post your favorite memories of the Cabbage Patch Kids™® at their Anniversary Web Site, which will open on September 1, 2008.
I got my hands on this precious fellow, courtesy of the folks at Play Along®Toys. Want to get your hands on this Limited Edition? To enter to win,

When they re-emerged last Christmas my mom must have been one of the first to grab one for the Little Imp. She loves it. It also came with a tiny tiny CPD. The funny thing about both of them…they have some sort of scent embedded into their skin. The actual CPD smells like Gardenia’s and the tiny one smells like blueberries. Strange.
Now if I could only find the birth certificates and other stuff they came with! *lol*

First off- the 25 year anniversary thing is making me feel quite old!
Secondly- I am amused that they are going to sell for less than they did back then. I doubt that I’ll buy any. I’ll just go raid my parents attic for my old ones.

Well alright, since you’re giving one away I guess it can’t hurt to play the odds.
I am now a happy subscriber.
Here’s my story…
All of my friends already owned Cabbage Patch dolls and I was just desperate to get my hands on one. They were practically impossible to get though. I had a big slumber party for my 9th birthday and all of my friends were there with their dolls. I was beyond ecstatic when I opened my gifts and discovered my very own Cabbage Patch Kid. She was a freckly redhead who went by the unusual name of Marietta Rania. My Mom still has tons of pictures of all of us with our dolls..and some of just the dolls.
I was also luck to get a doll which was purchased by my Aunt and imported from Scotland. He was a little baldy by the name of Joseph Oscar. He had the cutest little pair of navy blue velvet overalls.
I loved my Cabbage Patch Kids. Definitely going to have to retrieve them for my daughter next time I visit my parents.
See you on Twitter!

@Auds: These are not the ones that came out last year! These are the revival of the originals. No smells, just cuddly wuddly cuteness

When I was 10, the big slam for CPK was in full force. My Uncle Jess was a manager at a local Toy R’ Us, and he personally unloaded the truck that delivered the dolls to find just the right one for myself and my younger cousin. I still have her! Her name is Bonnie Carina; she was a baby style, with just a tuft of hair on top and a pacifier. Her outfit and paperwork are long gone, her plastic head is dinged and scraped but is still such an important part of my childhood. I chose not to break her out and add her to the toy box when my girls were born, I thought they would rather have something newer to play with, instead of Mom’s old yucky dolly.
I’d love to give my littlest girl (who loves baby dolls) a Cabbage Patch. We aren’t exactly a wealthy family, so I might save it and give it to her for Christmas if that was OK.
I’ve been a RSS subscriber for several months now, and enjoy reading your posts, your wry humor is spot on.
Thanks! Adriane

I had (and possibly still have in my mom’ attic) two of the Kids and a Koosa. I’m bummed I can’t remember all the names but I’m sure one was Melinda.
I used to take them to school with all the other girls and we’d play at lunch. I remember the school deciding they were a “distraction” so we couldn’t keep them at our desk. We had to line them up in the windowsill.
My mom had one of those hair dryers with the bonnet and long hose. I took the case from her and used it for all their clothes.
I have nieces and I know this would make me Aunt of the Year!

I just subscribed to your RSS feed.
I had two or three of these dolls. I remember standing in line for literally HOURS with my Mom to pick out the one I had to have! I don’t remember their names or anything now, though.
My sister hated them. She liked the Garbage Patch Kids (to rebel, I guess). Remember them?

I subscribed to you!! I grew up with these awesome dolls. We had the preemies, paci kids, koosas, and every accessory you can imagine. One Easter they were in our Easter baskets!! My first doll was Ellen, my second one came name Nicole Michelle, and that was one that I won on a spinning wheel at a bullroast. Love these dolls!!

I still have my very first one. His name is Everette and he was bald except for a little blonde patch on the top of his head about the size of a half dollar. My mom has our picture hanging up still…I couldnt get them done unless Everette was in it with me. I had every thing to go with him. My husband hates it because I still have my little Everette, he sits in the middle of our bed…needless to say he doesnt match with our oriental decor, but he is too cute in his little pale green jump suite and little white plastic shoes with his little white laces. I remember all the times he helped me through things, especially helping me get over my fear of the dark when I was younger. I would love to let my daughter experience the same feelings I had when I was 5. She is only 5 months right now, but this would be something I could tell her stories all about.

Hi I subscribed and I’m following you on twitter (rockinmama)
I remember my dad telling me that I wanted a cabbage patch so badly that he had to go to several different stores because they were sold out and had to wait in long lines. I still have my cabbage patch dolls! : )

Hi! I subscribed and follow you on twitter (GracieBelle). My mom just brought me all of my CPK dolls she had saved. I LOVED these when I was growing up. I was definitely NOT a Barbie girl.
I would definitely save this for Christmas, but of course I would have to buy another since I have two little girls. i don’t thinking sharing is an option : )

I still have my cabbage patch kid, Melinda, that I received for Christmas when I was in fifth grade. She lives in my hope chest, but don’t tell the cabbage patch people, I think it would be considered child abuse.

I’m subscribed via bloglines & following on twitter. My mom hunted everywhere for a CPK, my grandmas friend said she could get one. My grandma was so excited, told my mom not to worry. When I opened my package it was a fake, lol. My mom ended up finally finding a real one a few months later. It was a big long search. After I got my first, they were easier to find. I think I ended up with 8 - 10 of them, my favorites were the Cornsilk hair & the little newborns!

First of all, I have subscribed. Next your question about my cabbage patch memory. Honestly, I don’t remember all that much. I think I was kind of at the end of the cabbage patch era of my time. I remember being 4 years old and I always carried my cabbage patch doll around all the time. I wish I could remember her name, but I have no clue. She really looked like the one above in the picture you have posted. She is actually the first doll of mine that was special enough for me to remember. Thanks for the chance. What a wonderful giveaway. :)
