5 Reasons I Am NOT Going To BlogHer
May 26, 2009 by Deb · 4 Comments
For purposes of full disclosure, I use the BlogHer Ads network. I don’t always agree with the folks at BlogHer and don’t blog there, though I do have an account. My reasons for not doing so are many, but I won’t go into that here. This is about WHY I am NOT going to the BlogHer Conference this year. This is not a bash of the BlogHer people, conference or any person slightly affiliated with them.
I know all the benefits of attending conferences. I’ve spoken at many. I’ve attended 4 times that number and spent untold dollars gaining information, networking and just generally having a good time. But just for the record here are my Top 5 reasons: (In reverse order)
- Client work takes precedence. My clients are number one in my book. Taking two days away from clients may not seem like much to some, but my clients have gifted me with something precious and I don’t take that lightly.
- My personal moral and political beliefs. I don’t gee and haw with the liberal point of view. Obviously. While the good women at BlogHer strive to be “switzerland” in the world of politics, it seems (to me at least) its not the case. Liberal points of view are apparently more valued than my own conservative views on a number of topics.
- The state of the economy. Money is tight everywhere, not just in my personal checkbook. Spending thousands of dollars for a two day “women’s” conference seems counter intuitive to me right now.
- I haven’t a thing to wear. No seriously. Working in the vacation and resort segment for the last several years has left my wardrobe for work/networking professionally a little more than lacking. Ok its not a good reason, surely I could just go out and purchase some “new” clothes for the event. But see #3. Yes my professional wardrobe includes some great stuff I wear when speaking professionally. However, I was NOT invited to speak at BlogHer, see #4.
- #1 One Million Memories. My project to raise 1 million dollars for the Alzheimer’s Association this year. Many of you know or have heard about this. I am almost bursting at the seams, to keep from giving out all the great information about our launch. This project, #1 on my list is receiving all of my funding for the year. So I’ll be absent and un accounted for at any number of conferences. Slight one, where a generous benefactor has both opted to support the project and sponsor my attendance to the conference. More on this later.
So there ya have it. Trust me, I’m sure I’ll be hearing all about all the conference buzz and more. And I’m not really missing out on much. I AM giving my attention and love to the most worthy of causes.
By the way, if you’re just dying to go to BlogHer,( or any other conference for that matter) its not too late to look at sponsorship for your trip. Get my FREE book Sponsor Magic, that gives you all the ins and outs of sponsors. How to get em and how to keep em. Its got some great tips for monetizing your blog or site as well. Oh and did I mention….its FREE ! Go Get it!

I’m not attending either, but it’s for reasons that have more to do with social handicaps than anything else right now. I am however going to a teeny tiny blog-related gathering down along the Chesapeake Bay and I couldn’t be more excited!
Oh and I do tend to agree more than disagree on your take when it comes to the political leanings of those in BlogHer. I love being part of it, but have noticed the slant, at times.
Just something I’ve noticed over time.. Thanks for the comment! Glad you’re gonna be getting a little taste of IRL blog meetups.
Me too, all the same reasons. Except my client is my kiddo.
Takin care of biz at home is a number one priority! Good for you!
